English Story: Legend of Sivaratri

Posted on

Lubdaka was a family head who supports his family by hunting animals in the forest. Some of the hunting results were exchanged for household necessities and partly to be eaten with their families. He was very diligent in his work and quite skilled, so it wasn’t surprising that he always comes home with lots of prey.

One day, Lubdaka hunted in the forest like usual. He brought all the equipment tirelessly. However, that day was different from the usual day. Until late afternoon, Lubdaka had not yet obtained his prey. “If I don’t come home with some animals, what will my family eat at home?” said him. That though made Lubdaka even more excited and speed up his footsteps. Unknowingly, the day had become night and Lubdaka was in the middle of the forest. He decided to stay in the forest and look for a safe place. He then saw a Bila tree that was quite old and looked sturdy on the edge of a calm lake. He climbed the tree trunk and found a comfortable position to lean on. He tried his best not to sleep for fear of falling. In order not to fall asleep, he plucked the leaves one by one and drop them down. Unknowingly, those leaves hit the Linga underneath. Lubdaka himself didn’t realize that that night was the night of Shivaratri, where Lord Shiva was doing yoga.

One by one the leaves fell, Lubdaka began to regret all the evil deeds he had done in his entire life. On the tree, he determined to stop being a hunter. Lubdaka’s long thoughts about his sins seemed to speed up time. It felt like Lubdaka had been daydreaming for a moment, but suddenly the morning came. It illustrates that the sins he had committed were too many and he couldn’t remember one by one in one night. Since it was morning, he packed up to go home. From that day on, Lubdaka switched jobs as a farmer. However, being a farmer didn’t make him move as much as when he was a hunter. It made his body began to stiffen and hurt, which was getting worse by the day. Until the end, Lubdaka died.

Later, it was said that Lubdaka’s spirit floated in the sky. Lubdaka’s spirit was confused not knowing which way to go. The Cikrabala troops then came to take him to the Candragomuka crater in Hell. At that time, Lord Shiva came to prevent the Cikrabala troops from bringing Lubdaka’s spirit to the Candragomuka crater. There, a discussion took place between Lord Shiva and the Cikrabala troops. According to the Cikrabala troops, Lubdaka’s spirit must be taken to hell. This was because, during his life, he often kills animals. That opinion got another response from Lord Shiva. According to Lord Shiva, although he often kills animals, one night on the night of Shivaratri, Lubdaka stayed up all night and regretted his past sins. Thus, Lubdaka’s spirit deserved forgiveness. Long short story, Lubdaka’s spirit was finally brought to Shiva Loka.
