The sperm whale is the largest toothed animal in the world. This whale used to take a nap standing up.

  • The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is a marine mammal that breathes through the lungs.
  • Sperm whales have 20-26 pairs of conical teeth in their lower jaws. Each tooth weighs up to 1 kilogram!
  • The head of a large male whale can reach a third of its body length.
  • The brain of the sperm whale is the heaviest animal brain in the world. It weighs up to 8 kilograms or 5 times heavier than the human brain. Wow!
  • Sperm whales like to take a 10-15 minute nap in a standing position, with their tail down and head up. During sleep, this whale does not move and does not breathe.
  • Newborn sperm whale babies, are on average 4 meters long and weigh 1.1 tons.
  • Female whales are pregnant for 16 months. After giving birth, the mother whale will nurse her young for 2 years.
  • This whale lives in groups. One group usually consists of 10 – 20 individuals. If danger threatens, these whales will form a marguerite formation. Baby and calf will be in the middle, surrounded by adult whales.
  • Male sperm whales reach 16 meters in length and weigh 45 tons. While the female whale is 11 meters long and weighs 15 tons.
  • Sperm whales love to eat giant squid, octopus, and fish. In one day, this whale eats as much as 1 ton!
  • Sperm whales are great at diving up to 3000 meters deep! With just one breath, it can dive for 2 hours.
