A shoemaker, through no fault of his own, has become so poor that he ends up with nothing but leather for a pair of shoes. So at night, he cut off the shoes he wanted to start making the next morning, and because he had a good conscience, he lay quietly in his bed, praised himself to God, and fell asleep.
In the morning, after he had finished praying, and was just about to sit down to work, the shoes stood quite neatly on his desk. He was dumbfounded and didn’t know what to say. He took the shoe in his hand to take a closer look, and it was so neatly made that there wasn’t a single bad stitch in it, as if they were meant to be a masterpiece.
Soon after, a buyer came in, and because the shoes pleased him so much, he paid more for them than usual, and, with the money, the shoemaker was able to buy leather for two pairs of shoes. He cut it in the evening, and the next morning would begin to work with new courage; but he didn’t have to, for, when he awoke, it was already made, and neither would the buyer, which gave him enough money to buy leather for four pairs of shoes.
The next morning too, he found all four pairs made; and so it went on and on, what he cut at night was finished in the morning, so that he soon had his honest independence again, and finally became a rich man. Now it happened one night not long before Christmas, when the man had cut in, he said to his wife, before going to bed, “What do you think if we stay up late tonight to see who lent the money?” us this helping hand?”

The woman liked the idea, and lit a candle, and then they hid in the corner of the room, behind some clothes hanging there, and watched. When it was midnight, two beautiful naked men came, sat down by the shoemaker’s table, took all the work that was cut in front of them and began to sew, and sew, and hammer so skillfully and quickly with their little fingers that the shoemaker would not could avert his eyes in amazement.
They don’t stop until it’s all over, and the standing is done on the table, and they run fast. and hammering so skillfully and quickly with their little fingers that the shoemaker could not avert his eyes in amazement.

The next morning the woman said, “Little people have made us rich, and we really have to show that we are grateful for that. They run around like that, and wearing nothing, and must be cold. I will do it: I will make them a little shirt, and a coat, and a vest, and trousers, and knit both of them a pair of stockings, and you will also make them two pairs of little shoes.”
The man said, “I would love to do that;” and one night, when everything was ready, they put all their gifts on the table instead of the cut jobs, and then hid themselves to see how the little guys would behave.
In the middle of the night they ran in, and wanted to get to work immediately, but because they didn’t find a cut skin, but only a pretty little dress, they were at first astonished, and then they showed great joy. They dressed themselves very quickly, put on beautiful clothes, and sang,
“Now we’re very good boys to look at,
Why do we have to be cobblers longer?”
Then they dance and jump and jump over chairs and benches. Finally they dance outdoors. From then on they did not come again, but as long as the shoemaker lived, all went well with him, and all his endeavors were successful.
